India’s Fantasy Sports and Gaming industry is booming at 43.8 billion to and is expected to reach Rs 118.8 billion according to the Indian Federation of Sports Gaming (IFSG) and research firm KPMG India Private Limited (KPMG).
The IFSG and KPMG completed a research report called ‘The Evolving Landscape of Sports Gaming in India’ that found some interesting metrics for the growing industry around Fantasy Sports and Esports specifically.
The results of this research show an India very much attracted to the subject at hand. Here’s some growth highlights and poll results from their survey:
“Online gaming in India is seeing increased traction due to the growth of digital infrastructure, with fantasy sports emerging as an important segment in this space. With the number of fantasy sports operators growing rapidly and the number of users on fantasy sports platforms expected to cross 100 million by 2020, this segment has the potential to spawn a whole ecosystem around it, and could help deepen user engagement with their favourite sports,” – Girish Menon, Partner and Head – Media and Entertainment, KPMG in India.
It is also noted that underground sports betting is a huge pastime even if illegal in India. It’s believed that the security and ease of Fantasy Platforms will siphon off a lot of the activity into legal channels as the market expands.
Without a doubt, India’s growth in both Fantasy Sports and Esports (powered by mobile devices) will continue feverishly. The real question is: What brands and platforms will collect the most audience going forward?
